<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>The stretches </strong>are important because of common, chronic tightness in these muscles:</span></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Psoas</strong></span></li>
<li> <span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Rectus  Femoris</strong></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Lumbar Erectors</strong></span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Here&#039;s the thing. </strong> The relative tightness of these muscles creates excessive tension that &#034;shuts off&#034; other muscles that are crucial to posture and alignment, specifically:</span></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Gluteals</strong></span></li>
<li> <span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Hamstrings</strong></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Abdominals</strong></span></li>
</ul>
<p><strong><span style="color: #800000;"><span style="font-size: large;">Strengthen as well as stretch for best results!</span></span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>This means</strong> that not only do you need to address stretching those over tight muscles, you need to develop strength in the group that has become weakened.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: #800000;"><strong>What’s with the “pooch”, anyway?</strong></span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>As explained</strong> in the <a href="http://thetruthaboutfatlossforwomen.com/2008/12/21/a-flat-belly-in-7-seconds/">&#034;7 Seconds to a Flat Belly&#034; </a>Video,  abdominal pooch is caused by more than just extra abdominal fat, though that of course is a big factor here.  It is also due to prolapse of internal organs due to gravitational pull,  AND to reduced muscle tone of the Transversus Abdominus muscle.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>In brief, Abdominal Pooch makers are:</strong></span></p>
<ol>
<li><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>excess </strong>abdominal fat</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>prolapse</strong> of internal organs due to the effect of gravity</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>reduced </strong>muscle tone of the Transversus Abdominus muscle</span></li>
</ol>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Finding an easy</strong> to understand image of the TA muscle is difficult because it’s so well buried under all of the other abdominal muscles.  Yes, the full set of abdominal muscles work together as a team, and it can be difficult if not impossible to isolate them completely.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>However</strong>, the TA is head player when it comes to protecting the lower abdominal cavity from internal as well as external pressure.  That’s why it tightens up when you cough, sneeze, or laugh.  Or when you anticipate a punch in the stomach.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>The TA muscle also</strong> provides trunk stability and keeps the waist tight.  But if we don’t go out of our way to work the TA muscle, we lose the tight waist.  And the trunk stability.  And the flat belly.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;">I&#039;ve never, ever had a bad Bar Method studio experience. That includes those at this San Francisco location (<a href="http://thetruthaboutfatlossforwomen.com/2009/07/16/how-kate-kicked-my-butt-in-bar-method-class/">How Kate kicked my butt in Bar Method class</a>) and the studio in Walnut Creek.  There are several in the San Francisco Bay Area.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">How many have there been for me?  Probably under 20.  Yet that is enough time to have experienced no less than 7 instructors.  And the consistency of quality hasn&#039;t waivered &#8211; not once.  It&#039;s like the Starbucks of studios &#8211; you know you are going to get exactly what you came for, with no compromise in the quality or standard of delivery.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">As it turns out, this is no accident.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;">The Bar Method truly IS a method, on mulptiple levels.  Physical, mental, and emotional.  This is because the choreography of the workout flow is holistically designed to engage not only the body layer by layer but also to keep the mind focused.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">The choreography here is more than the sequence of steps.  Let&#039;s get that clear.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Physically,</strong> the Bar Method workout incorporates and well-thought out &#8211; and planned &#8211; sequence of instruction.  The workout builds from simple warmup, weaving in stretches and isolation work to intentionally alternate between comprehensive (all body) work, isolation work to work deep into the muscle  for superior body shaping, and stretching to create greater flexiblity, strength, function, and beauty.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Mentally?</strong> There&#039;s no down time.  Every minute of the 60 minute (count on precise start and end times, a real plus)  sessions is planned and presented in a fashion to keep moving things forward.  There&#039;s no time for glancing at watches or catching a quick chat between sets.  The workout keeps advancing, building with the creative force of instructional detail, counts, and the music.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Emotionally </strong>one emerges from this well-planned experience refreshed not only in body, but spirit.  The hour is meditative due to focus and orchestration.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>There&#039;s another trick </strong>in the arsenal of belly-flattening techniques that you must try if you haven&#039;t already.  You can find in the <strong>T-Tapp Wellness Workout</strong>.  It&#039;s called &#034;Organs in Place/Half Frogs&#034;. And as the <a href="http://www.t-tapp.com/store/shopaff.asp?affid=1030" target="_blank">T-Tapp workout</a> is featured in the June 1, 2009 issue of <span style="text-decoration: underline;">People</span> magazine which hit the stands May 22 (page 86), there&#039;s no time like the present to start &#8211; or reinvest in &#8211; the T-Tapp secret to a flat stomach. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Briefly</strong>, the <span style="text-decoration: underline;">People </span>magazine story features Heather Petrie who<strong> lost over 100 lbs</strong> while using T-Tapp.  Heather&#039;s story is remarkable not only due to her weight loss, but her inspirational journey with MS as well.  An important component of Heather&#039;s workouts is this unusual belly-flattening move.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>And with one of the all-time favorite</strong> videos on the YouTube <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/FitnessDreamMaker" target="_blank">FitnessDreamMaker channel</a> being <a href="http://thetruthaboutfatlossforwomen.com/2008/12/21/a-flat-belly-in-7-seconds/" target="_blank">&#034;7 Seconds To A Flat Belly&#034;</a>, I know that this is one topic &#8211; the quest for a flatter stomach &#8211; that just won&#039;t quit.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">I have observed how this simple exercise series has taken inches off the belly with 10 days of practice. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">True story.  Read on.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>But first</strong>, a little insight into what creates belly pooch.  Then  links to where you can study the details of this move. You can even aquire it on video should you so desire.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Let&#039;s get started.</span></p>
<p><strong><span style="color: #800000;"><span style="font-size: large;">What is belly pooch all about?</span></span></strong><strong><span style="color: #800000;"><span style="font-size: large;"> </span></span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>That bulge below the belt </strong>is actually due to a combination of factors. Extra avoir du pois is easily deposited in the belly for most of us.  No mistaking that this is a contributor to belly pooch.  Weight loss and fat loss always improve the situation.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">But weight and body fat, as it turns out, are not the whole story.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #800000;"><span style="font-size: large;"><strong>Prolapse of internal organs</strong></span></span><span style="color: #800000;"><span style="font-size: large;"><strong> </strong></span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Due to the effects of <strong>gravitational pull</strong> &#8211; and the contribution of our upright posture to same &#8211; there can be a progressive displacement of the organs of the abdominal cavity. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">This can result in protrusion of the belly forward &#8211; belly &#034;pooch&#034;.  It can also result in increasing pressure on the pelvic floor, creating continence problems as well.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">With the Organs in Place/Half frogs move as featured in T-Tapp, the problem is addressed directly.  Manual pressure is implemented to restore position of internal organs in the abdominal cavity while on ones back &#8211; effectively using gravitaional pull to one&#039;s advantage.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>This flattens the abdominal wall immediately</strong>.  Then, a series of reverse-type abdominal curls is engaged in to tighten the newly flattened lower abdomen.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Yes, scout&#039;s honor I have seen these kind of results.  Yet realize this doesn&#039;t mean that 2 inches of bodyfat came off the belly pooch area in 10 days.  That would be impossible without surgical intervention such as liposuction.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">What HAS occurred with this kind of dramatic inch loss through the lower abdomen is the restoration of position of internal organs.  This includes the assist of the Half Frogs reverse curl to tighten and tone the transversus abdominal muscle over the newly flattened abdominal area.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: #800000;"><strong>Where&#039;s the proof?</strong></span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Well, you may not aspire to  <strong>&#034;6 Pack Abs&#034;</strong>, but you just may well be on the quest for a flatter belly, leaner middle, and all-around trimmer feel through the waist. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Yes?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">For a long time I&#039;ve <strong>ranted</strong> about the promise, rampant in the fitness industry, of abdominal exercises to &#034;blast away belly fat&#034;. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">I&#039;ve <strong>scorned</strong> the use of (and accompanying pressure to purchase)  pricey toys that parade as &#034;specialized abdominal training equipment&#034;. </span><img style="float: right;" src="http://ts2.images.live.com/images/thumbnail.aspx?q=392109963929&amp;id=2a0e030a5219adb42f7edccb9b6b451e" alt="" width="124" height="86" /></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Because I know </strong>that what it takes is negative energy balance (see &#034;<a href="http://thetruthaboutfatlossforwomen.com/2009/03/04/its-the-calories-honey/" target="_blank">It&#039;s The Calories, Honey!</a>) and well-designed intense exercise (see <a href="http://thetruthaboutfatlossforwomen.com/2009/02/25/epoc-in-your-fat-loss-toolkit-part-2/" target="_blank">&#034;EPOC Training Parts 1 and 2&#034;</a>) to recomposition the body and reshape the middle.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Which is why I read with pleasure the intro to Craig Ballantyne&#039;s <a href="http://fitdream.turbulence.hop.clickbank.net/?page=ttabstrial" target="_blank">special offer</a> on his Abs workout system.<br />
</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Now, Craig&#039;s materials <em>can</em> be a little hard sell. But don&#039;t let that get in the way of relishing these nuggets as written in his promo materials that I thought you&#039;d enjoy.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Ha! I wish one of those abdominal exercise contraptions worked half as good as the so-called &#034;experts&#034; say, but infomercial gadgets don&#039;t burn belly fat or flatten your abs (they only burn your money and flatten your wallet!).</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; color: #0000ff;"><strong>Me:</strong> There ARE some penny-wise toys that you can utilize to challenge your abdominal area as part of a more comprehensive, total body exercise.  For example, the <strong>Swiss exercise ball</strong> can be incorporated in many other compound exercise moves so that you don&#039;t have just one &#034;ab roller&#034; for just one exercise!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Myth #3 &#8211; You Have to do Ab Workouts Everyday to Get Six Pack Abs</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><br />
Not true! In fact, one of the secrets of top fat loss trainers is to drop boring, repetitive ab exercises and replace them with total-body abdominal exercises you only need to do for a few minutes three times per week.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; color: #0000ff;"><strong>Me:</strong> Fewer, higher intensity workouts deliver more in terms of protecting and building muscle as part of your body shaping routine.  Who wouldn&#039;t like to drop oodles of reps for smarter, fewer ones?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Myth #4 &#8211; You Have to Do Cardio in the Fat Burning Zone Everyday to Burn Belly Fat</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Long, slow boring cardio in the fat burning &#034;Zone&#034; is not the best way to lose ugly belly fat. In fact, in a recent study, subjects did 40 minutes of slow cardio three times per week for 15 weeks but didn&#039;t lose a single inch of stomach fat. However, only 20 minutes of interval training helped subjects spot reduce their belly fat.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; color: #0000ff;"><strong>Me:</strong> OK, this is the topic of an upcoming article I&#039;m writing about <strong>&#034;Fat Burning Zone&#034;</strong> hype.  The  term &#034;fat burning zone&#034; is <strong>misleading</strong> and I&#039;ll tell you why right here on my blog in an upcoming article.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Research shows that most abdominal machines in gyms are extremely DANGEROUS for your low back! But you can do simple, safe, and effective abdominal bodyweight exercises and interval training at home to flatten your stomach.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;">And if you have been looking for something simpler and far less time consuming than you&#039;ve been doing, and thought there must be a simple, more effective way to a trimmer middle, then here is your inspiration to try just that.</span></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: medium;">Here are my 3 simple steps to success at trimming time from your workout and excess from your waist:</span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">1)  <strong>Focus on compound muscle movement and exercises.</strong> Many workout systems will do this for you, such as compound body weight exercises, free weight training, <a href="http://www.t-tapp.com/store/shopaff.asp?affid=1030" target="_blank">T-Tapp</a>, Pilates&#8230;</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">2)  <strong>Pay attention to your dietary plan.</strong> This is #1 when it comes to weight loss (fat loss).  If you have excess <em>avoir dupois</em> through the middle, you need energy balance that results in a slow reduction of bodyfat stores.  That means moderate calorie deficit, over time.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: verdana,geneva;">The exercise I have to share with you today is ALSO easy to take on the road, so it&#039;s perfect for travel &#8211; or even a commute! Recently I had the chance to utilize my isometric skills to great benefit, in terms of energy (AND intermittent body shaping!).  Yes my friends, it was during a 14 hour flight across continents, on the way to and from Italy, that I pulled isometrics out of my exercise arsenal!<br />
</span><span style="font-family: verdana,geneva;"><strong><br />
This is one of exercises that I utilized with great success.</strong></span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: verdana,geneva;"><strong>Isometric Power Breathing and Belly Flattening:</strong></span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: verdana,geneva;">(The details are demonstrated in the video;  at the same time, here is a short written overview)</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: verdana,geneva;"><br />
Yes, this exercise is perfect seated, standing, and even lying down!  Of course on the plane when seated, it proves to keep  posture improved during a long flight, keep my energy more even, and even helped with digestion!</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: verdana,geneva;">And all it takes is a few rounds of 7 second holds!</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: verdana,geneva;">Here&#039;s  how:</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: verdana,geneva;"><strong>Step One: </strong> Inhale slowly (I use a count of 7)</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: verdana,geneva;"><strong>Step Two: </strong> Slowly and evenly exhale, while at the same time being mindful of pulling the abdominal wall IN in a contracting fashion to assist with the &#034;out&#034; breath (count of 7 works well here, too).</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: verdana,geneva;"><strong>Step Three:</strong> When you have achieved full exhale and peak of contraction through the abdominal muscles, give it all a good SQUEEZE (as hard as you can!  Like squeezing a fist)</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: verdana,geneva;"><strong>Step Four:</strong> Let go, allow the breath to rush back in, and repeat the entire sequence, say, 7 times!  You can take extra breaths in between if you need the catch-up.  This is like a whole series of situps&#8230;.sitting up!</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: verdana,geneva;"><strong>Precautions:</strong> if you have high blood pressure challenges, you should never hold the breath during exertion phase of exercise, so continue breathing through the hold of the muscle squeeze rather than allowing yourself to hold the breath.</span></span></p>
